A Tribe Called Quest was a rap group , between 1990 and 1998 released five records. The group consisted of Q-Tip , Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad . A fourth member, Jarobi White , left the group after their first album " People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm . "

Q-Tip and Phife had grown up together in Queens , and met Muhammad in high school . The name of the group was coined in 1988 by The Jungle Brothers , a rap group whose members had been at the same school. Not long after, the group began performing live, even they started shooting at a local record label . The group was part of the Native Tongues family, a hip hop artists collection known for socially conscious and positive messages that they incorporated into their music. In this family there were also include De La Soul , Leaders of the New School , Monie Love and Black Sheep .

In their time, A Tribe Called Quest were unique in that they are presented with clever lyrics and a jazzy sound as an alternative to gangsta rap and macho behavior that accompanied it. Their second album " The Low End Theory "from 1991 , is considered one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.

Successor " Midnight Marauders "(1993) gave the group a hit in" Award Tour ". The relationship with many hip-hop artists was reflected in the CD booklet, which are drawn portraits of more than fifty befriended artists like the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, as well as Heavy D , Ice-T , and the Beastie Boys , that Q-Tip would collaborate later.

In 1996 the album "Beats, Rhymes and Life" was released, which is somewhat disappointing. After the release of the album "The Love Movement" in 1998 , the group disbanded.
