Robert Frederick Xenon (Bob) Geldof (Dublin5 October 1951) is an Irish singer, philanthropist and songwriter. During the 1970s, he was known as a front singer of the Boomtown Rats. His international fame took considerably thanks to his charity concerts Live Aid (1985) and Live 8 (2005).

His father Robert was the son of a Belgian immigrant. His mother died when he was 6 or 7 years old. He has two older sisters, Lynn and Cleo.

Music Career[Edit]Edit

Bob Geldof was mid 1970s known as lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. In 1978 they had their first hit with Rat trap; their next hit, I Don't Like Mondays, was their largest. Geldof quickly became a colourful spokesman for rock music.

The Boomtown Rats did not remain long at the top. When Geldof in november 1984 a post about the famine in Ethiopia he saw to do something about it. Aware that he not only could he wrote with Midge Ure ofUltravox the band the song Do they know it's Christmas? and brought it together with colleagues from the music world under the name Band Aid that year just before Christmas as a single, with the aim to raise money to alleviate the famine. The idea was widely retrieved: the following took place in the United States with in USA for Africa We are the world, written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Geldof, not satisfied with the huge success of the single, then organized a mega concert for charity, Live Aid, which yielded more than EUR 140 million for projects in Africa. In addition, he traveled around the world to raise money.

For his work he received many awards, including a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize and by Queen Elizabeth II , he was made Knight in the order of the British Empireexalted. Because he is not a British citizen has, he comes here for not normally eligible. He can therefore not use the title Sir in the British press, even though he often is called Sir Bob Geldof.

Along with U2's Bono campaigns he has since spent a lot of time to the debt burden of Africa to push back.

His personal life was plagued by tragedy. His wife Paula Yates, mother of his three daughters (named Fifi Trixibelle 's, Peaches Honeyblossom and Pixie frou-frou), left him for her new flame, singer Michael Hutchence and got along with him another daughter, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily. After Hutchence had committed suicide through the courts his daughters got Geldof assigned. Geldofs experiences during his divorce led him to also protagonist in the struggle for the rights of the father was. In that context, he performed on several occasions for the organisation Fathers 4 Justice on. When the legal guardian died, Geldof also Yates of Tiger Lily. Geldof was convinced that they had to be educated along with her three half-sisters. On april 7, 2014 was daughter Peaches, mother of two young sons, themselves found dead in Wrotham; She died at the age of 25 as possible to overdose on heroin, like her mother Paula Yates in 2000.

He continued to write and record music and touring the world as a solo artist. His most famous song after Live Aid is probably The great song of indifference.

On 2 July 2005, together with Bob Geldof, Midge Ure organized Live 8, a series of free concerts in the G8 countries and in South Africa. The concerts were aimed at the top of the G8 in Scotland to influence and coincided with the 20th anniversary of Live Aid. In addition, he organized some demonstrations under the banner of Make poverty history.

The Flemish city of Ypres has Bob Geldof proclaimed an honorary citizen.


In 1982, Bob Geldof has also played in a film adaptation of the double album The Wall by Pink Floyd. This musical/film was created by Alan Parker. The film is about Pink, a depressive rock musician, which withdraws itself into a psychological isolation. The title The Wall refers to this isolation.
