Review:

With a name like Bunky and a label like Asthmatic Kitty, what do you really expect this to be? Of course, this is some crazy ass indie-pop that some how keeps within the reign of the genre while it completely destroys every boundary ever set by it. San Deigo’s Bunky is Emily Joyce (vocals and drums) and Rafter Roberts (vocals and guitars), along with members of Black Heart Procession, Pinback, Rocket from the Crypt and The Castanets helping out when they can. The result is this weird art-pop sound that jumps from cutesy ballads to blaring fuzzed-out freak-outs all in the same song. If name dropping is what reels you in, not only has Roberts produced albums for the above bands, but also for the likes of Kill Me Tomorrow, The Album Leaf, Gogogo Airheart, The Rapture and more. And he definitely was on his A-game for this record as well. Bunky is art-pop, punk, garage rock, blues, psychedelia, noise and much, much more all boiled down into two exuberant individuals with a nose for fun. Michael Ardaiolo
