[edit] Biography

The oldest record label, Columbia started as a local company selling Edison's wax cylinders, and eventually moved into 78s. They were the first to sell two-sided records and the first to sell LPs. In 1931, they merged with EMI, but the American division was promptly sold off because of anti-trust concerns. For a while, CBS Records became the parent company, but it was soon folded back into the Columbia banner. In 1988, they were bought by Sony.
