[edit] Biography
Founded in 1942 by songwriter and performer Johnny Mercer, the label was absorbed by EMI in 1955, and became one of the largest US record labels (with the help of such acts as The Beatles and The Beach Boys -- not that it was doing too shabby before and not that EMI's money and clout didn't help, either). They're still going strong today, running many spinoff labels, distributing some of EMI's European acts and also providing distribution for some other indie labels like Matador.
