Sonic Youth is a band that has taken a noise sensibility and applied it to rock music, in a way that advances on and is more accessible than most post-punk or No Wave. They often use unconventional tunings on their guitars -- sometimes tuning all strings to E, or other non-standard tunings. They're still soldiering on today.
