Folk music is based in many forms of "traditional" music, from dance music (the source of most folk tunes) through pastoral scenes, ballads, songs of rebellion, Negro Spirituals, early country music and bluegrass, and the storytelling tradition. In the 1960s, there was a revival of folk music and it even entered the pop music world, with a move to more acoustic and "rootsy" music, and was considered the pop alternative to Rock. The defining feature of Folk is not that it is music that anyone can write and any can play (though many attempt it) - just because if is 'of the people' it does not necessarily mean simple: (for instance, the complex modal tunes sung by unlettered country people of the last two centuries). Some folk music is simple and some is complex.
