China Crisis is an English pop/rockband founded in 1979 by Gary Daly (vocals/keys) and Eddie Lundon (guitar) in Kirkby, a place near Liverpool. [3they made music that appeared on new wave , but had strong similarities with the post punk boom who was active in the early 1980s. China Crisis during their career was successful inEngland in moderation with ten hit singles between August 1982 and January 1987 and six albums. In addition they had commercial success in Western EuropeAustralia,South America and North America.

The beginning[Edit]Edit

With a shared fondness for Stevie WonderSteely DanDavid Bowie and Brian Eno Daly and Lundon played together with various Knowsley post-punk bands. Daly tried after synthesizers and a drum machine from. Along with Lundon began writing songs when Daly. The duo then asked drummer and percussionist Dave Reilly to join their to connect. In 1982 they released their debut single "African and White" as China Crisis at the independent record label Inevitable. [3In June 1982 they helped the formerTelevision guitarist Tom Verlaine at London's Venue. [4]

Successes[Edit]Edit

The band was signed to Virgin Records and made the recordings of their debut album Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms Some People Think it's Fun To Entertain, which was released in december 1982. [3a reissue of "African & White" became the first hit of China Crisis in England with a 45th place in the UK Singles Chart. The single that followed, "Christian", took the 12th place in the beginning of 1983 and made in the United Kingdom with their nationally known. [3[5at the time, Reilly left the band, but was still listed as a guest artist on the single along with the new Member Steve Levy who played the oboe and saxophone . The album finished in 21st place in the UK Albums Chart. [5during this period the band toured as support along with Simple Minds (as seen in interviews on the dvd Live in Concert at the Paul McCartney Auditorium Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts).

After Gary "Gazza" Johnson (bass) and Kevin Wilkinson (drums) were added to the band they released a second album named Working with Fire and Steel-Possible Pop Songs Volume Two in november 1983. [3on the album were the other singles "Tragedy and Mystery" (which was released six months earlier), "Hanna Hanna" and the title track "Working With Fire & Steel" which was a hit single in Australia. The album was a Top 40 success in England. China Crisis was then between 1984 and 1985 concerned with their range of hits, starting with their only UK Top 10 hit single "Wishful Thinking", which landed at place number 9. [3[5]

Their third album, Flaunt the Imperfection, was produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan was known and took out the ninth place in the UK Album Chart in May 1985. [3[5China Crisis was so revered by their direct cooperation with Becker that they give him a ' official ' member of the band mentioned, that consisted of Daly, Lundon, Johnson, Wilkinson and Becker, in the credits of the album. At the time Walter Becker lived on Maui, Hawaii, where he was approached by Virgin to help in this project, making him leave his pregnant wife had to help the band. Walter never officially appeared with the band and the following tours were done with the new keyboard player Brain McNeill. Johnson was now credited as a co-writer of Daly and Lundon.

The album was preceded with the hit single "Black Man Ray",[5which the fourteenth place in the UK Top 20, was an international success and good criticism received. The follow-up, "King In A Catholic Style (Wake Up)", took out the 19th place in the UK Top 20 and became the last major success of the band. [5A third release from the album, "You Did Cut Me" came no further than the 54th place in the English League tables.[5they released at the same time the video compilation from Showbiz Absurd .

In 1986 the band worked together with the producers Alan Winstanley and Clive Langer (who previously worked with Madness ) to What Price Paradise, which contains the song "Arizona Sky", the first single released from the album and the Australian hit "June Bride". The entire band was now credited as songwriters. Another single "Best Kept Secret" of this album took out the 36th place of the top 40 in England in the beginning of 1987. [5it was also the final single from China Crisis that would reach the Top 40. [5]

The five piece band worked with Becker again together in 1989 for the album Diary of a Hollow Horse, which received rave reviews, but had little commercial success, however. [3it brought the singles "St Saviour Square" and "Red Letter Day", which both continued to hang at the bottom of the UK Singles Chart. [5Becker produced most of the songs on this album were, but this time was not listed as an official member of the band.

The band's last studio album, Warped By Success, was released in 1994 after the band retired from the Virgin Label. The album contained the last studio single "Everyday The Same" that the rankings with an entry in the UK Top 100. [3[5Although Johnson and Wilkinson still small contributions, the band was now seen as consisting of: Daly, Lundon, producer Terry Adams and sound engineer Mark Phythian. In 1995 they released a live unplugged album and video called Acoustically Yours, which eventually became their swan song in terms of recordings. This album contained a final single, a live version of "Black Man Ray" and also saw the return of Johnson, Wilkinson and McNeill.

Since 1992, there are four compilations of their work for the English and American markets and three live DVDs appeared. The first of these, called "Collection", reached the Top 40 in the UK Album Charts in 1990.

On 17 July 1999 drummer Kevin Wilkinson on 41-year-old age to end his life by hanging. Wilkinson had played in many different bands, including The waterboysFishThe ProclaimersSqueeze and with Howard Jones. Dedicated In 2000 Daly a number on to Wilkinson on the compilation album Green Indians that was composed as a tribute to Wilkinson.

Recent activities[Edit]Edit

Since the late 90s China Crisis concentrates on live performances in which only the original founders, Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly consistently present. Although the band by a number of musicians for longer periods is helped, in particular by guitarist Colin Hinds, which more ten years has helped.

Held In december 2002, Daly and Lundon during one evening a "unplugged" concert in ManilaPhilippines with the help of a local band, Rivermaya. They toured England during January and February of 2007 as part of their 25th anniversary. In June 2008 they announced that they act for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark would be during their UK October tour. In February 2009 the band had a gig to raise money for The Friends of Meols Park.

Then they had also a performance at The Robin 2, BilstonWolverhampton on 20 February 2009 and in StoneStaffordshire on 22 February 2009. Daly's art exhibition ' How To Live & Love Your Life ' was held in the Kirkby Art Gallery, Kirkby, Knowsley, Merseyside from 23 February to 10 May 2009. China Crisis played in Fort Perch Rock on the Wirral on August 8, 2009 and on the Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames,Oxfordshire on 22 August 2009. In August played similarly on the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool.

Then they went back to the Philippines to play in Eastwood City on 20 January 2011 and they played for sold out audiences on the Rewind Festivals in Perth and Henley-on-Thames in August 2011. They performed on september 9, 2011 along with Ex-Simple Minds in the SMX Convention Center in the Philippines and then in other locations in the Philippines, Hong Kongand Singapore . China Crisis at later shows will be assisted by the 23-year-old Siân Monaghan on the drums. [6]
