Collage is the audio equivalent of the cut-up technique developed by the dadaists, where material from different sources is cut together to form a new piece of art. It's related to both the Noise genre and musique concrète. Some collagists will include their own material in with the sources; others will do pieces exclusively out of samples. Unlike with visual collage, however, there has been more legal troubles over the use of other sources. Collage acts like Negativland have been vocal about fighting for more codified fair use rights to allow for this form of art.
