Biography[Edit]Edit

Brubeck first studied at the University of the Pacific and then studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Benicia (California). His most famous Group was the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which was founded in 1951 with saxophonist Paul Desmond (1924-1977), bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello (1928-2011).Brubeck experimented with unusual time signatures in the jazz. His most famous recording is Take Five (1959), a composition by Paul Desmond in 5/4-gauge. His second best known song is "Unsquare Dance (1961), written in 7/4-gauge. Another well-known song is Blue Rondo à la Turk. The album Time Out (1959) of the Dave Brubeck Quartet was the first jazz album of which more than 1 million copies were sold.

Brubeck understood early in his career that he had to create a different kind of jazz in order to stand out from the inventors of this music. By among other things using hisEuropean beats and quirky compositions based thereon, he developed his own jazzconcept.

Except because of their own sound was the Dave Brubeck Quartet also breaks new ground by its multiracial composition. This made it not a lot of clubs in the United States in Brubeck allowed to play tvchannels and asked where he would act to the black bass player Eugene Wright out of the picture, something Brubeck always refused.

He died one day before his 92nd birthday.
