David Jon Gilmour (CambridgeEnglandMarch 6, 1946) is the singer/guitarist/songwriter of Pink Floyd.

David Jon Gilmour was born in the village of grantchester near Cambridge. David (he won't be named Dave) studied at the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology. His father was a professor at Cambridge University.

Gilmour began his musical career with the group that Jokers Wild, especially a band covers of Chuck BerryThe Beach BoysManfred MannWilson Pickett and The Kinks. In 1967 he joined Pink Floyd in 1968 and was lead guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett, after the band decided that with drug problems faced, not for a concert. WhenRoger Waters left the group in 1985, after feud was Gilmour the new leader of Pink Floyd.

In addition to his career with Pink Floyd, he released solo albums and also played in the silent periods of Pink Floyd as a session musician on many great artists, or also produced itself. He has also discovered a number of artists and helped; the best known of which is probably Kate Bush.

David Gilmour is known for its pure play and special mute techniques. He usually plays on a Fender Stratocaster, but he also plays bass guitar (as can be heard on the song One of these days). His guitar solo in Comfortably Numb, a composition by Gilmour and Roger Waters, was elected in 2007 by the British music magazine Q as best guitar solo of all time. [1apart from guitarist Gilmour also multi-instrumentalist, he plays drums, as well as saxophone and harmonica.

Gilmour has four children with his first wife Ginger. In 1994, he married the journalist Polly Samson, and together they have three children. S already had a child from her first marriage.

On 2 July 2005, Gilmour played with Pink Floyd — including Roger Waters -on Live 8. This action resulted in an increase in 1343% of sales of the album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. This stated that the additional profit to the goals of Gilmour Live 8 go.

After his solo albums and David Gilmour 'About Face on his 60th birthday in 2006, he released his third solo album, "On An Island". The album sold 6 months after release for more than 1 million albums. Phil Manzanera, neighbor of Gilmour (ex-Roxy Music), co-produced the cd and toured as 2nd guitarist.

In september 2007, the DVD version of the On An Island Tour appeared, entitled Remember That Night. The DVD was recorded in 3 evenings in May 2006 at The Royal Albert Hall and was voted best music-DVD of 2007. There are special guest appearances by David BowieDavid CrosbyGraham Nash and Robert Wyatt (ex-Soft Machine and Matching Mole). Steve Distanislao (ex-Crosby, Stills & Nash) played drums, Guy Pratt (ex-Icehouse, ex-Pink Floyd touring band since 1987) on bass, and Dick Parry (ex-Pink Floyd v.a. Dark Side of the Moon) saxophone. John Carin (ex-Pink Floyd touring band from 1987) and Rick Wright (ex-Pink Floyd) played keys during the tour. Rick Wright still played with Gilmour when they were scheduled to perform at the BBC in 2008, but after a short battle with cancer lost the Floyd-nestor life on 15 september 2008. Polly Samson and Dick Parry replaced him a week later during this performance.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Polish trade union Solidarność Lech Wałęsa asked Gilmour to come play in the ports of Gdańsk. As the last on the list of locations of the "On and Island Tour 2006" played Gilmour for a 50,000-strong audience together with the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zbigniew Preisnerwho also the orchestral arrangements of ' On an Island ' on itself had taken. Special guest on ' A Great Day for Freedom "(orchestrated by Michael Kamen) was Leszek Mozdzer also ' A Pocket full of Stones ' had responded to On an Island. From "Live in Gdansk" are 5 different releases on the market in many different compounds.

8 October 2010 the album Metallic Spheres came from. This is a collaboration between The Orb and Gilmour.

On 2 May 2011 played Gilmour the song Comfortably Numb during Roger Waters The Wall live concert at the O2 Arena in London. He was like 30 years earlier, during the Pink Floyd concerts, on top of the wall to play.
