Elmer Bernstein (New York City1922 – april 4, Ojai (California), 18 August 2004) was an American composer best known for his music for the movies The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Ten CommandmentsThe Man with The Golden ArmTo Kill a MockingbirdGhostbusters and The Great Escape

In the 1950s he was one of the victims of senator Joseph McCarthys actions against artists with left-wing sympathies. He ended up on the ' grey list ' so that he has no large orders got more.

Bernstein was friends with, but not related to, fellow composer Leonard Bernstein.

He died in his sleep at his home in Ojai, California.
