Real Estate is an indie rock band from Ridgewood, New Jersey, and based in Brooklyn, New York. The group formed in 2008 and consisted of frontman and guitarist Martin Courtney (Predator Vision), feature guitarist Matt Mondanile (Ducktails), bassist Alex Bleeker, and drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay. In 2011, Duguay was replaced by drummer Jackson Pollis, and Jonah Maurer was added on keyboards and guitar. The band has released two albums, an eponymous debut album in 2009, followed by their sophomore album, Days in 2011. Following a change in lineup in which Jonah Maurer was replaced by keyboardist Matt Kallman, Real Estate released their third album, Atlas in 2014.
Biography[]
Members Martin Courtney, Matt Mondanile, and Alex Bleeker were childhood friends and played in separate projects during high school. The group started playing as Real Estate after Courtney returned to New Jersey after college in Washington in the summer of 2008, along with Mondanile's return from Massachusetts. Their debut album was released off of Woodsist Records on November 17, 2009 to critical acclaim, achieving a "Best New Music" tag on Pitchfork, and a normalized 79% rating on Metacritic.
The lineup of the band changed in 2011 with the departure of drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay, who was replaced by Jackson Pollis, and the addition of keyboardist, Jonah Maurer. The band released their sophomore album, Days on October 18, 2011, earning the band another "Best New Music" award, and charting to #52 on Billboard US.
Real Estate began recording their third album in 2013 in New York City, and announced the album in January of 2014, releasing the first single, Talking Backwards. Atlas was released on March 4, 2014 to critical acclaim, and the band has since embarked on a worldwide tour for most of the year.
