Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was an American singer. She was referred to as the "Queen of Tejano music", a type of Mexican music that incorporated other styles, such as country.

Life and career[]

Early life and Selena y Los Dinos[]

Selena was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena began to sing when she was a child in her families band. She didn't know how to speak Spanish at that time but she learned through lyrics. Her family band was called Selena y Los Dinos, where her brother played the guitar and her sister played the drums, while Selena was the vocalist of the band. They started singing at weddings and clubs. Her father Abraham, managed and produced the band.

Solo career beginnings and relationship[]

Selena released her self-titled debut album on October 17, 1989. Most of the songs from the album were recorded at AMEN Studios in San Antonio, Texas. The album become Selena's first material to debut on a national music chart, and also performed better than any other materials from other female Tejano singers.

In September 1990, Selena released her second album, Ven Conmigo. It became the first ever Tejano material to achieve gold record statue, selling more than 500,000 copies.

Selena secretly married Chris Pérez on April 2, 1992, who was the lead vocalist of Selena y Los Dinos but was fired by that time due to Pérez's relationship with Selena. Selena added Pérez's last name to hers.

English releases and death[]

Selena went to work on an English-language album that she hoped would put her on the top of the U.S. pop music charts. Unfortunately, she did not live to see its success. On March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Selena was shot by Yolanda Saldivar who was the founder of Selena's fan club. Selena was about to fire her because she was reported multiple times of stealing money from her fans. Selena died of blood loss.

After Selena died, they produced her fifth and final album, Dreaming of You. It spawned two hit singles, "I Could Fall in Love" and "Dreaming of You".
