Album: Coat Of Many Cupboards
Appears On (Mixes): Past The Barber and Gymnasium
Song Notes: The theme to "Fireball XL5" seems to be one of those songs like "In Heaven (Everything Is Fine)" from Eraserhead -- a lot of bands seem to cover it, and then are surprised when they realize everyone else has covered it too. I've got a few different versions of each song (the Pixies' "In Heaven" almost appeared instead of "Head On", actually) -- Madness also had a cut on the cover. I like the XTC version better, though, so that's why I went wit this one. This was an outtake from White Music and after appearing on bootlegs was finally officially released on the Coat Of Many Cupboards compilation. This version, however, has a dub version by Andy Partridge appended to it, which he and John Leckie (the producer of the track) put together after the recorded version wasn't working out, mainly to learn how to do dub tracks. Both versions are pretty cool, though; I really like Andy Partridge's dub stuff—if you want more, check out the Explode Together: The Dub Experiments CD, compiling the Go+ EP and the Take Away/The Lure Of Salvage LP Andy put out under the name "Mr. Partridge". I love that record, but it's not exactly where you want to start if you're new to XTC; it sounds nothing like them, despite being made up of their songs. - Rev. Syung Myung Me
