For Whom the Bell Tolls "is a song by the American heavy metal band Metallica. The song is from the album Ride the Lightning and was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Cliff Burton. The number is based on the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The intro to the song contains especially sound of the bass guitar, which Cliff Burton and nowadays also Robert Trujillo with the fingers plays without plectrum.

The song was also included in their 1999 live album, S & M (Symphony and Metallica), where Metallica performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
