Genre DescriptionEdit

Garage was a 1960s flavor of rock that provided the roots to the punk movement, at least in America. Garage was inspired by some of the British Invasion bands (notably The Who and The Kinks, especially), and often featured a distorted, gritty, energetic sound with simple song structure. Garage was responsible for many regional hits, and the occasional song would break nationwide (The Sonics had a few minor nationwide hits after having huge smashes in the Seattle area), and it was these bands that influenced a lot of people afterward. Bands are still influenced by Garage, including The White Stripes, The Strokes and in the 1980s and 1990s, a lot of the alternative rock and grunge movements could be traced back to Seattle garage acts like The Sonics and The Wailers, influencing acts like The Young Fresh Fellows, The Fastbacks, Nirvana, Mudhoney and many others.
