Biography[Edit]Edit

George Michael was born in Bushey, London as Georgios Kyriacos Panagiotou (; FromGreek: Παναγιώτου). His father, Kyriacos Panagiotou, is a Greek Cypriot restaurateur who moved to England in the 1950s and changed his name to Jack Panos. His mother's name was Lesley Angold Harrison, a dancer. She died of cancer on 26 February 1997.

Michael began his career with the founding of a ska-band "The Executive", along with his best friends Andrew Ridgeley, Ridgeley, Andrew Leaver and David Paul Mortimer. This band was short-lived.

Wham![Edit]Edit

[1]

See Wham! (music) for the main article on this topic.

In 1981, when he founded with Andrew Ridgeley, Wham! started success for Michael. The band's first album, Fantastic!, still ended up on the eighth position in the Album Top 100, but the albums beyond: Make it bigand The Final were both the first place. In between, made George with a Careless Whisper beginning with his solo career. This number written by him and Ridgeley in 1981 became one of the most played songs in the 1980s[citation needed]. Michael also sang along with the hit Band AidDo They Know it's Christmas? He donated the proceeds of his own Christmas plate Last Christmas to charity. On the song Nikita Elton Johntakes Michael's background vocals for his account.

After the farewell single Edge Of Heaven went Wham! in 1986 from each other, with a farewell concert in the sold-out Wembley Stadium.

Solo Career[Edit]Edit

[2][3]At a concert in Munich, 2006

Michael wanted to focus on a somewhat more mature audience than teenage girls, whom he attracted in his time with Wham!. The first step in his solo career was therefore the duet with soulicon Aretha Franklin"I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)", a big hit in 1987. The song reached the first position in Netherlands, but also inBillboard Hot 100 in the United States and the United Kingdom. This hit was after Careless Whisper (1984) and A Different Corner (1986) Michaels third solo number 1 hit. Also it was the first single he does not himself had written (outside the Band Aid project counted). With "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" won George also a Grammy Award in 1988.

Faith[Edit]Edit

It was Michael's first solo album Faith. The first single, "I Want Your Sex was ignored by many radio stations because of the evocative subject. To counter this made the singer a new prologue for the song, in which he explained that the song was not only about sex. Many radio stations turned instead of this song: another version of the single "I Want Your Love, in which the word sex ever was replaced by love. The song was despite (perhaps even thanks to) the theme was a big hit, and three weeks at the top of the Top 40.

The second single, the title track Faith was released in October 1987, a few weeks before the edition of the album. The song was one of the most famous songs of Michael, it was six weeks in the Top 40. The video clip of the song is also very well known, with the singer in a leather jacket, with jeans and guitar, in addition to a classic jukebox.

Also three other singles from the album were top 10. Father Figure came to place two, One More Try Monkey obtained fourth place and kicked it to six. Kissing a Fool was the first single from Michael not listed in the top 10 came, but got stuck at 1 pm.

Listen Without Prejudice vol. 1[Edit]Edit

Listen Without Prejudice vol. 1 (Listen without prejudice) came on the market in september 1990. After the huge success of predecessor Michael tried Faith with this album to make a new image for himself. The title is an indication of his desire to be taken more seriously as a songwriter. There was no promotion for this album, including no music videos for the singles.

The first single from the album was Praying For Time (August 1990). This is a bleak number, with the theme of injustice. In the song is an echo-effect used; the key is so low that the sunny Michael's voice totally disappears. The song was his first politically motivated song since Wham!.

The second number is Waiting For That Day, however, got little attention because a violent number approximately equal the single came out with the album, making the sales figures of the single remained very behind. The Top 40 was not met.

The next single was Freedom ' 90, the only single with a music video. The song was a project of Michael, that confessing his happiness showed from his time with Wham!. Michael himself did not appear in the clip, directed by David Fincher. Instead, it was a number of supermodels, including Naomi CampbellLinda EvangelistaChristy TurlingtonCindy Crawfordand Tatjana Patitz , asked that the words of the song lip-synched.In the clip, a number of symbols from the Faith-time destroyed, including the leather jacket, the guitar and the jukebox.

Listen Without Prejudice vol. 2[Edit]Edit

During the Cover to Cover Tour in 1991 Michael sang along with the song Elton John Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me ", a song originally from 1974, of Elton John alone. The song was released as a duet again now, and became a huge hit around the world.

In the meantime it was album Listen Without Predjudice vol. 2 deleted for unclear reasons, even though it is likely that it was because of the struggles between the singer and his record label Sony. The company had not fully supported the release of his second album due to the lack of video clips.

Instead of the album was the single Too Funky released by the label Epic Records in the spring of 1992. Lyrically a simple number, Michael's plea for a animal sex. The musical was the song the most uptempo number since Faith. The song appeared on the album Red Hot + Dance "adopted by the Organisation internationale de Red Hot (fighting AIDS through pop culture) is released. The song also appeared on his "best of" albums from 1998 and 2006. In the music video for the song Michael plays a Director, that a number of films including models Linda EvangelistaTyra BanksBeverly Peele and Nadja Auermann. The song was a big hit, the most played song on the radio in Europe in 1992[source? ].

Five Live[Edit]Edit

[4]

See Five Live for the main article on this topic.

Michael has performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, a tribute to the late lead singer of Queen. Michael stole the show with his version of "Somebody to Love", after which there was whispered that he would be the new frontman of Queen. However, it is at rumors remained.

Five Live is an album from 1993, containing five songs sung by Michael, Queen, and Lisa StansfieldSomebody to Love and These Are The Days Of Our Lives were recorded at the concert, KillerPapa Was A Rollin' Stone and Calling You are live performances by Michael during his "Cover To Cover Tour".

Lawsuit against Sony[Edit]Edit

During his appearance at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Michael already knew that his Brazilian Anselmo Feleppa friend was terminally ill. In March 1993 related to aids passed away this to a brain hemorrhage. Michael stopped 18 months writing lyrics and went through a deep depression.

He stopped all his anger in a lawsuit against Sony, about his contract. According to the judges was Michael not only victim of an unfair contract, but also by an industry where power belongs to a small group, to the detriment of artists. Sony had as a counter argument that Michael had signed a binding contract. This was disproved by attorney Mark Cran, who said that the contract was signed at the age of 18, and that the singer was stuck since that time with the consequences.

The judgment of the case was to the detriment of Michael. Therefore explained the singer that he would release any new material until he had completed the minimum number of bonds to Sony.

Older[Edit]Edit

November 1994, during the first edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards Michael came back with new material. The song "Jesus to a Child" was a tribute to his Brazilian friend Anselmo. By the lawsuit with Sony could release no new material Michael at Epic. However, the label DreamWorks made a deal with Sony, leaving Michael with a new label continued. "Jesus to a Child" was the first of six singles from the album Older.

The second single released was "Fastlove" , an energetic song about the desire for gratification and fulfillment without consideration. The number fell to because a chorus failed, and because of the futuristic video clip. After the two singles, the album was released, ten years Older after the lifting of Wham!. The album achieved the first place in the Album Top 100, the second album of three solo albums what got this (Listen Without Prejudice came to number 2). The album brought Michael a MTV Video Music Award for "Fastlove" and a MTV Europe Music Award for best male artist in 1997. However, this was not a good year for Michael, because in the same year his mother died of cancer.

Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael[Edit]Edit

Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael is a greatest hits collection from 1998. The album contains 29 tracks spread over two CDs. The first cd, "For the Heart" contains most of the ballads, while on cd 2, "For the Feet", mainly its dance numbers can be found.

There were also some new songs at. It was the first single Outside . The song gives a humorous look on his arrest, shortly before, for the ' provoking ' a (undercover) police officer in a public toilet. The song reached the eleventh position in the Dutch Top 40.

Asa duet with Mary j. Blige was the second single and achieved the seventh place in the Top 40. In North America, the song was not on the album because the record company of Blige ruled that the association with an openly homosexual and controversial pop star would not be good for her career.
