Iron Maiden are a British heavy metal band from the East End of London. Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre. The band was formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. They are considered as one of the main pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement.

Band Biography[]

In 1975 Steve Harris formed Iron Maiden. There were many lineup changes, until the band's first self-titled album, which stabilised a lineup. Dennis Stratton, guitarist, left for the second album Killers and was replaced by guitarist Adrian Smith.

With the third album, The Number of the Beast vocalist Bruce Dickinson came in and replaced former singer Di'anno. One more lineup change came on the following album, Piece of Mind, which was the introduction of drummer Nicko McBrain, replacing Clive Burr. This was the first steady lineup and went from 1983–1989, wherein they recording 5 studio albums and a live album Live After Death. This era was probably the height of Maiden's popularity and overall career.

In 1989, guitarist Adrian Smith left, and Janick Gers (ex-Gillan guitarist), replaced him for 1990's No Prayer for the Dying. Dickinson at this time had a solo band as well. By the tour's end of the next album, Fear of the Dark, it was clear that Bruce Dickinson no longer wanted to be in Iron Maiden.

Dickinson was replaced by vocalist Blaze Bayley, and they recorded 2 albums with this lineup, and released a best of. In 1999 however, Bruce said that he would like to return to Iron Maiden. Adrian Smith also returned, making this band a 6 piece lineup with Janick staying. The band has recorded with this lineup since 2000.
