[edit] Band Biography

Johnny Cash is one of the most important figures in music. Not just country music, but all forms of popular music pay a huge debt to Johnny Cash, both in the sound of the music but in the subject matter and just plain influence. He was one of the big acts signed to Sun (perhaps the most famous after Elvis Presley), and soon jumped to Columbia, where he put out many huge and important singles and albums. He was also repsonsible for giving many other acts their starts, notably The Statler Brothers who used to tour with him and also provide backing vocals for him (that's them on "Daddy Sang Bass" along with June Carter Cash, of course) and Kris Kristofferson (singing his song "Sunday Morning Coming Down", lyrics intact, on his show). He also gave Merle Haggard a boost by having him on his popular TV show after he'd been in prison. Johnny Cash also had great success as an actor and writer. After falling out of favor with the Country Music establishment, he recorded American Recordings with Rick Rubin, which was critically acclaimed, and the followup, Unchained won the Country Grammy, despite being basically left out in the cold by the establishment -- prompting Rick Rubin to place the famous ad in the trade magazine with Johnny Cash flipping the camera off, with a caption thanking the industry for their support. Johnny Cash passed away on Sept. 12, 2003.
