Keith Emerson was born in Todmorden, Lancashire, England. His father, Noel Emerson, was jazzpianist and played accordion in a British army band. He got the music with the spoon; in his own words, he made his own songs all at the age of three. After a move to Worthing in Sussex , a piano in the House, and soon developed Emerson turned to a virtuoso. Already at the age of 14, he was a local piano sensation. Some years later, after moved to London to be, did he play in the bands as "the v.i.p. 's" and "Gary Farr & the t-bones".
In the second half of the 1960s put Emerson along with bassist/vocalist Lee Jackson, drummer Brian Davison , and guitarist David O'List on. "The Nice" first as backing band, later with own music, they played a private combination of classical, blues, jazz and rock. With this band Emerson took a number of LP's on.
Emerson played during performances in particular on the Hammond organ, and the beginning of the 1970s he was one of the first to the modular Moog-synthesizers used in the rock music. He was with Emerson, Lake & Palmer the first that the instrument also took with him on tour and played on stage. Emerson had a good relationship with Dr. Robert Moog, the creator of the instrument; There was a lot of mutual admiration for each other's can.
1970 was the end for "The Nice" and the beginning of a new initiative. Greg Lake wanted to leave at King Crimson, and previous contacts made that they were looking for a drummer and found in Carl Palmer."Emerson, Lake & Palmer" (ELP) was born and with their debut on the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 as a topper. The rock adaptation of Moesorgski's painting exhibition, ending with gunfire, made an overwhelming impression and their name was established.
This was followed by eight years of successes with ELP. Six Platinumalbums, and the top act on the California Jam festival in 1974 (with 500 000 man the largest concert). Turning point was in 1977, however, occur with a large Orchestra for a performance of Emersons Piano Concerto No. 1. Performing such a project was too much, organizational, but especially financially. After the debacle they had to again as three on tour, to update their balance. Two more albums were made, which do not apply as masterpieces from their repertoire, and they broke up in 1978; the spark that made the fire in 1970 which ELP was extinguished.
Each of the members went to work: Keith Emerson made his first solo album, which came out in 1980: "Honky". He released a second album which included a series of own interpretations of classic Christmas songs: "The Christmas Album".
Emerson has in the years after the break-up of ELP also dealt a lot with making music for movies and tv.
In 1985 were looking for Emerson again cooperation with Greg Lake. Carl Palmer had at that time other pursuits and was replaced by Cozy Powell. For a time, they performed with the three of us on and they made one album, after which the cooperation stopped. On your next project together with Carl Palmer was missing Greg Lake then again. Its place as bassist and vocalist was taken by Robert Berry. Under the name "3" they made one album.
In 1992 the trio reunited for a new album: "Black Moon". In the years after the three of them went on, until there came into existence in 1998 arguing about producing the album at that time, with the result that ELP again fell apart. In the meantime, or another number of albums: "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" in 1993, "In the Hot Seat" in 1994 and "Then And Now" in 1998.
In the new millennium is Emerson with two projects started. On the one hand, he has founded a band which should support him on his solo tour, the "Keith Emerson Band", and on the other hand, it is also "The Nice" come back together for a tour by England, with a new (live) album.
Emerson has multiple soundtracks created for film and tv, including:
