History[Edit][]
Marillion was founded in 1979 as Silmarillion by Steve Rothery, Doug Irvine, Brian Jelliman and Mick Pointer. In 1980 the label in Marillion to prevent problems with the heirs of Tolkien. The tree long Shot Fish came in 1981 at the band as the lead singer. In 1982, the group signed her first record deal and soon after came out as debut single Market Square Heroes . The debut album Script For A Jester's Tear came in 1983, followed by Fugazi from 1984.
1985 was the year of the big breakthrough with the album Misplaced Childhoodby Marillion, whose ballad Kayleigh ended high in the charts. This is also one of the few major hitsuccessen that the band earned. The next album, Clutching at Straws from 1987, still contains the hit Incommunicado, but sold for 30 percent less than its predecessor. Fish left the band in 1988 because it wanted to go further and the other band members solo pulled Steve Hogarth of the band "The Europeans" and "How We Live" as new lead singer.
In 1991 the band tried under duress by record company EMI to achieve success with the pop-like album Holidays in Eden. Cover My Eyes , although the single sold well, but the album sales remained far behind Misplaced Childhood. Then In 1994 came from Brave , a complex and very bleak 70-minute concept album that meant a return to the old musical direction.
In 1995, Rossi was Afraid of Sunlight, again a concept album, this time dealing with the downside of Fame. Various celebrities were examined (John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, O.J. Simpson, Donald Campbell). This cd also didn't score in the charts. It is the last album that the band recorded for EMI.
After the group left the record company, the group tried it with independent labels. This resulted in mostly bad marketing and Ditto the band skinny critics in the press. went into those years quite anonymous through life, but spent three albums on the market (This strange engine, Radiat10n and marillion.com).
After an e-mail message in 1997 by Marillion that they don't in America is because of lack of money, can get rows by a fan from the us a tour Fund established on the internet. This was enough to leave come to Marillion raised money for a small club tour in the us.
The years 2000 and 2003 restate what a call on internet may result. After the band got in 2000 without record deal, the Group decided to do it in future all by itself. A call from the band prior to their new album (yet to take) to buy turned out to be a success. From this album, Anoraknophobia, 12.674 pieces were pre-ordered, whereby the group could pay the recording of the cd itself. The success of the campaign again for the first time since 1995 yielded the group a deal with EMI, this time for the distribution and marketing. Anoraknophobia is the first cd since Misplaced childhood that sells better than its predecessor. The 13th album by Marillion, Marbles, 12.772 pieces went in the for sale in a Deluxe double-cd version, in stores choose the band in favour of a single-cd version back. With the proceeds of the sale paid for Marillion this time not only the studio and producer David Meegan, but also the distribution and marketing are taken. Of Marbles came the singles you're gone and Don't hurt yourself in the British and Dutch top ten of the charts after a call via internet the singles massively in the first two weeks after the release to buy. The campaign delivers the band a lot of press attention, particularly in the United Kingdom. For the first time since 1997, the Group also went back to the United States and Canada for a tour. In the winter of 2005 appeared the live dvd Marbles on the road.
Marillion has in 2006 to their 14th studio album Somewhere Else worked, that on april 9, 2007 came out. On 11 June came the single Thank You Whoever You Are/Most Toys out (double A-side), which in the following week reached position 6 in the Top 100. This is the highest position the band ever obtained in Netherlands.
In October 2008, the 15th studio album "Happiness is the Road out. In contrast to Somewhere Else, where the band has little interaction with the fans wanted, was "Happiness is the Road as a pre-order album order. On 10 september, following in the footsteps of Radiohead album Marillion "free" made available. Ask the music files of the user an email address for advertising purposes.
On October 2, 2009 brought Marillion Less is More , an acoustic album. Several songs from previous albums were stripped down and fitted with new arrangements. It was among other things using old instruments such as an original church organ and Dulcitone. Marillion has done a theatre tour including hereafter in Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the members also working on various solo projects. Steve Hogarth has an album recorded with Richard Barbieri of Porcupine Tree and is meanwhile working on Egbert Derix which in 2012 the Annie MG Schmidt price has won. Both Steve Hogarth as Fish granted their cooperation to Egbert de los Reyes ' album ' Paintings in Minor Lilac ' (2012), on which the music of Marillion is central. DeeExpus played with Mark Kelly and Pete Trewavas along with Eric Blackwood with Edison's Children.
