Nirvana was one of the most known bands of the grunge era and one of the defining bands, in the public mind, of the "Seattle Sound" of the early 1990s. They were also one of the bands that helped Sub Pop blow-up into a huge (for an indie) label, as they'd released the first few releases. The band ended with the death of Kurt Cobain. His death is surrounded with controversy; while the official cause of death reports that he was killed by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head, there is a school of thought that he was murdered by his wife, Courtney Love, and it was made to look like suicide. The other members went into other projects, though the most successful was Dave Grohl, who formed Foo Fighters.
