Noise music is a wide-ranging genre, ranging from Free-Jazz inspired music to found sound. Noise is typically thought of as a Japanese genre (as it's sometimes called "Japanoise"), though its roots are in the experimental classical music genre of Musique Concrete as practiced by such folks as Stockhausen and Edgard Varese. It's also been absorbed into Industrial music, via Krautrock groups like Can and Neu as well as straight-ahead rock and punk via noise-rock bands like Sonic Youth and Boredoms.
