Although James Marcus Smith was educated at Western Military Academy, a training school for the Army, he chose a career as an actor and singer. He took acting and singing lessons. Under the name Jett Powers took two plates at a small, independent record label . They were songs in the style of Elvis Presley . Proby was heard that he could do perfect after. Presley The sheets did nothing.
Smith befriended Sharon Sheeley, the fiancé of (died in 1960), singer Eddie Cochran . She thought him the stage name PJ Proby (a former friend of hers called so) and arranged for him an audition at Liberty Records . Under the name PJ Proby he recorded three singles for Liberty, which had not been successful. In 1963, he tried it again under the name Orville Woods. At that time there was a strict separation between 'white' and 'black' music. PJ Proby had been assigned to the white music. He hoped that the single Wicked Woman , sung by an unknown, would be turned to "black" radio stations. That's exactly what I did, but did not produce the much desired success.
Meanwhile he was going to write songs, usually under his own name (JM Smith and James Marcus Smith). Numbers of his hand have been recorded by Johnny Burnetteand The Searchers . He also sang demos for things like Elvis Presley and Bobby Vee , as a support for themselves when they were recording the song later.
Sheeley suggested Proby for Jack Good, an American who in Britain had moved there and TV shows made by pop musicians . He invited Proby out to work on a large-scale show "Around The Beatles", in which, besides The Beatles themselves include Cilla Black , Long John Baldry and Millie Small occurred. The show was created by the satellite on May 6, 1964 Telstar broadcast worldwide and the breakthrough of PJ Proby, who performed in the outfit that would make him famous in the near future: aponytail , a shirt with ruffles, a tight velvet pants and shoes buckles. Proby settled in Britain. Later in 1964, followed by The Walker Brothers suit. Gary Walker befriended Proby and was impressed by his success on the other side of the ocean.
Proby signed a contract with Decca Records and released two records: Hold Me and Together . They were both melodic ballads that have been changed beyond recognition by his up-tempo rock songs . The plates both made it to the UK top ten.
Proby's old record label Liberty Records did not accept that Proby was switched to another company. Liberty litigated against Decca and got the rights to Hold Me and Together plus the following plates Proby would make.
When he got into trouble. In early 1965, he broke twice in quick succession during a performance of his tight velvet pants. Thanks to this "obscene behavior" from that moment he was no longer welcome in the TV programs from the BBC and entertainment channel ATV. Did not want to let him perform. Too many theaters Proby's answer was the title of his next single: I Apologise (I apologize). The plate, which only the pirate radio was turned, reached the eleventh place in the UK Singles Chart and agreed Proby's enemies milder.
His next record, Let the Water Run Down and That Means a Lot , showed a steady decline in its popularity see, even though That Means a Lot written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney . The song was recorded by The Beatles, but they were not satisfied with the result and gave it to PJ Proby, whose repertoire it to better fit their idea. However, it did not go beyond a mere 30th place.
With Mary , like Somewhere derived from the musical West Side Story , PJ Proby suddenly was way back in November 1965. The song reached the eighth. The following records, however, remained stuck in the lower echelons of the British charts and did nothing. In early 1967 he scored with Niki Hoeky his first and only hit in the United States (23 in the Billboard Hot 100 ).
Proby's LPs only took the first, I Am PJ Proby , the charts (16 in the UK Albums Chart). Remarkably, the album Three Week Hero of 1969. Which was recorded by a group of session musicians, including some celebrities. So did four musicians who shortly thereafter together Led Zeppelin would form. The background vocals were provided by the The Family Dogg group. On some songs played Clem Cattini , former drummer of The Tornados . With members of the future Led Zeppelin ( Jimmy Page , John Paul Jones and John Bonham ) Proby had moreover not uncommon recordings.
Two songs from the album were released as a single, The Day That Lorraine Came Down even before the album came out. It was not a success. Today I Killed a Man sounds like a song from the American Civil War .The narrator in the song shoot a rebel soldier "- so called the soldiers from the southern states themselves - death. But the song was written by the singer-songwriter duo Roger Cook (born 1940) and Roger Greenaway (born 1938). The crowd of 1969 associated the song immediately with the highly unpopular Vietnam War . However, the single did nothing in Britain or the U.S., but he was an unexpected hit in theNetherlands (eleventh).
After a temporary return to the U.S. in 1966 and many financial problems Proby was in the seventies, back in Britain, performing in musicals . He acted as Cassio in a musical version of Shakespeare's Othello , calledCatch My Soul . In 1977 he played the role of Elvis Presley in Elvis - The Musical . One of the writers was Jack Good, who Proby to England had achieved. Elvis was played by three actors: Tim Whitnall as Elvis in his younger years, Shakin 'Stevens as Elvis during his service and the years he made films, and PJ Proby as Elvis in recent years, with appearances in Las Vegas .
He has also performed in cabarets and nightclubs, and he made occasional plate, but the years he was in the charts, were over. In 1978 he made an LP with the Dutch group Focus and guitarist Eef Albers , Focus con Proby .
In the eighties, he went back to make some more records, with many songs that he himself had written. In 1992 he received during a vacation in Florida a heart attack . He was and went into the next year in the musical one year out of circulation Good Rockin 'Tonite about the life of Jack Good. Proby played it himself. In 1995 he played Roy Orbison in the musical Only the Lonely . In 1996 came Elvis - The Musical on stage again with Proby back into the role of the older Elvis.
In the same year Proby took for the first time in years the British charts (if not higher than number 58) with the plate Yesterday Has Gone , a duet with Marc Almond .
In the early 21st century, Proby toured extensively, especially in the nostalgia circuit. He did a tour in 2001 with The Searchers in 2003 and 2004 by The Troggs and Herman's Hermits . In 2006, he participated in the "Solid Silver Sixties Show.
Proby now lives in a village in Worcestershire . In 2011 it came to light that he has taken very little to his career as an actor and singer and gets welfare. He was indicted for allegedly concealed. Revenues from performances In March 2012, he was acquitted.
In the medley Under New Management of The Barron Knights 1966 pop stars take the government of Great Britain over. But: "Unfortunately it would be impossible to fit / PJ Proby in the Government / 'Cause he would cause a split (' PJ Proby unfortunately can not, be included in the government because that would run on a tear off).
In 2002 brought Van Morrison album Down the Road from. One of the songs is called Whatever Happened To PJ Proby? It is a nostalgic look back to the time when artists like PJ Proby, Scott Walker and Screaming Lord Sutch (three are mentioned by name) have created a furore. Screaming Lord Sutch was, moreover, in 1999, three years before the release of the album, deceased.
