Phoenix is a French rock band from Versailles. The group consists of singer Thomas Mars, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Branco witz and guitarists bassist Deck D'Arcy.

The band is on the same record label as Air, and also has played for several times in the Air. Phoenix has released five albums to date: UnitedAlphabeticalit's Never Been Like ThatWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and Bankrupt.

Phoenix was founded in 1995 by Thomas Mars, Deck d'Arcy and Christian Mazzalai. The trio knew each other from the elementary school and began playing in the garage of Mars, which is located in Versailles was (asuburb of Paris). Later the band got a fourth band member: Mazzalai's brother Branco (later known as Laurent Branco witz) joined the group as a guitarist. Together they started playing in bars around Paris, which mainly covers of Hank Williams and Prince showed up. [1In 1996 chose the name Phoenix as band members. [2the band started their own record label, ghetto Blaster, which they in 1997 their first single, "Party Time/City Lights" released. [1[2a short time later, the band signed their first record deal with Source Records, which was also connected to Air . The two bands could find well with each other and Phoenix acted several times as backing band with British television appearances by Air. Also appeared at the first single Source Records: "Heat wave" came out in 1999.

The debut album by Phoenix, United, was released via Astralwerks Records in 2000. The album contained guest appearances by, among others, Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk and Philippe Zdar of CassiusUnitedwas succeeded by Alphabetical in 2004. [1the third album it's Never Been Like That appeared in 2006 and was recorded in Berlin. That the recordings made by members of the Group took place there for a freer feeling and a looser approach. Mars on the process: "We wanted an experience leaves everything to a deserted place and makes it your own. It helped us to speed up the album. " [2]

There followed a short break after the third album for the band because of the newborn child of Thomas Mars. [1when the band reassembled for a new album, tried different shots were locations, such as a houseboat on the Seine. The band finally chose for the studio of Philippe Zdar, who also worked as a producer on the album. This was the first time someone outside the band helped to the creative process. Mars on the collaboration with Zdar: "he helped us with building a kind of Frankenstein, something that would be initially scary. In the beginning the music sounded not like us, but the more we were familiar with, the more we could appreciate it. " In 2009, the band returns with the fourth album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. [2the album won a Grammy Award the following year: Phoenix if the price for ' Best Alternative Music Album ' receipt. [3]
