[hide]*1 History

The song was recorded live in Minneapolis in the summer of 1983. The gig was the debut for Wendy Melvoin in The Revolution. The base of three songs from this concert were for the Purple Rain album, including that of Purple Rain. In the studio was later among other things an extra verse and chorus deleted, since it is the emotional tension of the song too much disturbed. The song was a total of three minutes in the shortened.

Purple Rain begins with a short guitar solo which follow a drum and an organ , causing a gospel atmosphere arises. To this end, three verses follow with a growing emotional element. After the body takes a guitar solo on the song, after which the song comes to a second emotional. The song ends with violins.

The emotional element has multiple meanings; superficially it seems an apology for switching from one love to another, on a deeper level, however, it seems to be on a spiritual allegory. There is a theory that Purple Rain a metaphor for heaven is inspired by the death of a woman on an operating table which is said to be life after death is full of falling Purple Rain.

Prince has the song played on nearly every tour since 1984, except for a short period during his change of name in a unspeakable symbol, when he wanted to be remembered not to his old hits.

The song was later played by many different artists of different genres such as Tori AmosLeAnn Rimes and The waterboys, from Jazz to Orchestral. [1At the 500 greatest songs of all time compiled by the magazine Rolling Stone is Purple Rain on the 143th place.

The b-side"God", is a much more religious song by Prince, which is about the book of Genesis. In the 12-inch version in Great Britain was also an instrumental version of the song "God" is present, this song was also known under the name "Love theme from Purple Rain" of which part is shown in the film.
