Ramses Shaffy was born in the Parisian suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, the son of the Egyptian consul Ramsès Chaffy and the Polish Countess Alexandra the Wysocka ofRussian descent. The first seven years of his life were spent in Cannes with his mother. When this got tuberculosis , Shaffy — came through an aunt in Utrecht and a children's home — visit the Leidse foster family of rose and Herman Snellen, where he grew up as Didi Sai. The farewell of his mother is a major point in his life, witness his song take the train to the North.

He made the high school in 1952 and was not adopted at the Amsterdam Theatre school. Then, he made his debut in 1955 at the Dutch Comedie. In 1960 he traveled with his partner Joop Admiraal to Rome in the hope to find work as a film actor, but should then be turned back, they turned back again. The letters to their deceased mutual friend Shireen Saleh in 2004 were bundled in letters from Rome. In 1964, Shaffy founded the theatre group Shaffy Chantant on.[2he worked long term together with singer Liesbeth List and pianist Louis van Dijk. The most famous song of the Group was the Shaffy Cantata. Others made short time part of his ensemble, among whom Thijs van Leer (to him is the song "you are now inside it" devoted). With Liesbeth List in 1968 he set up among other things the song Pastoral on the plate, a song that would acquire great fame.

Also from the early eighties performed again on Shaffy as an actor in both films as on the shelves (toneelgroep Amsterdam). He garnered in 1993 success with his rendition of Don Quixote in the musical Man of La Mancha by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. He also played in the Flemish/Dutch William of Orange mini series the role of Earl of Egmont.

Not long after the turn of the century, he was inducted into the Dr. Sarphatihuis. This had to do with prolonged excessive alcohol consumption whereby he showed symptoms of the syndrome of Korsakov. [3]

In the fall of 2005 he stood again in the charts for the first time in years, with a new version of his hit song "Let me" (from 1978), this time Sung together with the bandAadi and Liesbeth List.

Then joined Shaffy occasionally again. So he sang during a benefit concert in the Concertgebouw (2005) and during an outdoor concert in St. Niklaas, Belgium on the occasion of the July 11-events (2008). After the end of that last performance he got flowers offered by the singing duo Nicole & Hugo, which earlier that year with her version of Pastoral in the Flemish charts was ended up.

His last appearance was on november 27, 2009 in the Sint Laurens Church in Rotterdam. Although he was seriously ill, he played piano with the presentation of the laurenspenning to Sander de Kramer. Shaffy died a few days later at the age of 76.

In 1967 he received an Edison. In 2002 he received the Lasting Applause Price (Award). [4]

Shaffy received on 31 May 2006 the first Edison Award for Cabaret as well as Normal and Rita Reys. Edison-Director Kees van Wagner reached the bronze statuette from during the presentation of a CD box set of the entireoeuvre of the solo singer Let my songs now but roam. Shaffy received the award for his extraordinary merits for the Dutch music.

On november 6, 2007, in the Amsterdam Theatre a Nail by the Leiden sculptor Jeroen manufactured bust of Shaffy unveiled by Liesbeth List. On this occasion was Shaffy serenaded and by a host of friends, among whom were ascribed to Thijs van Leer, Gerard Aadi, the Leiden poet Jaap Montagne and singer-song writer Xavier Baudet.

On May 5, 2009 it was announced that Shaffy suffered to esophageal cancer , on which he died on 1 december. [5[6he is buried in Zorgvlied on december 8, 2009. His grave is located on the small square Bale, right under a young tree. During his funeral was this tree decorated with red roses and white ribbons, each with a Word from the text: sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire. Not without us.
