Roy Claxton Acuff (Maynardville (Tennessee), 15 september 1903 –?, november 23, 1992) was an American country singer. He was born in MaynardvilleTennessee, as the third of five children.

Biography[Edit]Edit

Acuff played semi-professional baseball, but an injury in 1929 and a mental collapse in 1930 ended his aspirations to play for the New York Yankees .

He decided to focus on the music and traveled to the South of the United States. Eventually he formed a band, The Crazy Tennesseans. Acuff was also a fixture in countrytempel Grand Ole Opry, where he shared the stage with several times in 1953 Bobbejaan Schoepen.

He had a short career in the politics and lost the fight for Governor of Tennessee in 1948.

Acuff has an entry on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1541 Vine St. and in 1962 was included in the Country Music Hall of Fame and in 1979 in America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.
