Ryland Peter Cooder (Ry) (Los Angeles, March 15, 1947) is an American guitarist and producer.
Initially he worked as a slide guitarist. Cooder has worked extensively as a studio musician where he has worked on many film soundtracks. Cooder provided among other things the film music for Paris, Texas (1984) by Wim Wenders. He also played in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
Recently his trilogy: Chavez Ravine, My name is Buddy and I, Flathead. Also appeared in 2008 the collector The UFO has landed that his film music and his solo work together.
He worked with the Rolling Stones between 1968 and 1970. So he played the slide guitar solo on Sister Morphine. Cooder left the Rolling Stones because he felt that the members of the Stones there with his songs off went (plagiarism).
Cooder has made many albums in which he colluded with well-known and less well-known musicians and in lesser-known styles. An example of this is Chicken Skin Musicwhich resulted in a renewed interest in music from Hawaii.
He also made a contribution on the album Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart, where he played slide guitar.
In 1994 , he participated with the Malian blues guitarist Ali Farka Touré album Talking Timbuktu on.
On his album Buena Vista Social Club (1997) he collaborated with Cuban musicians, which earned him a Grammy Award . Wim Wenders directed a documentary about this project, which in 2000 was nominated for an Academy Award.
During concerts in June 2009 in Carré in Amsterdam brought Cooder together with bassist Nick Lowe, his son Joachim and singer Juliette Commagere a selection from his oeuvre. The announced Flaco Jimenez had to attend because of a hernia.
In 2011 Cooders album Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down issued.
A year later, he released the album "Election special" as his support for the Democratic Party and president Barack Obama
