Mendes was a promising classical pianist, but became interested in jazz. He started playing in nightclubs in the late 1950s during the rise of the bossa novaAntonio Carlos Jobim, Mendes played with who also is seen as his mentor, and many other jazz musicians throughout Brazil. Mendes formed the Sexteto Bossa Rio group in 1961 and took the album Dance Moderno on. He began to tour Europe and the United States, Mendes recorded albums with Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Mann and playedCarnegie Hall in the.

Mendes went live in the United States about 1964 and recorded two albums with the Group Brazil ' 65. When sales of the new album's history, he replaced the Brazilian singer Wanda da Sah by the talented Lani Hall. He took the album with Sergio Mendes and Brasil ' 66 on. the album was Platinum, thanks mainly to the success of Mas Que Nada. After this groundbreaking plate went Mendes more commercial numbers. So he did a cover of the famous song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David , The Look of Lovethat was in the top 10 right away. This was followed by covers of The Fool on the Hill (The Beatles) and Scarborough Fair(Simon and Garfunkel). These were big hits. The success made him the biggest Brazilian Star of the world[citation needed]. He performed in the White House for president Johnson and president Nixon.

The career of Mendes was on its peak in the 1970s, but he remained very popular in South America and Japan. He continued to develop Brazilian music, including Stevie Wonder, that the R & B hit The Real Thing wrote. In the eighties he made successful plates. In 1983 he had a big hit with Never Gonna Let You Go. But his real success only came with his album Brasileiro in 1992. He won a Grammy. In the 1990s he went to create albums as he in the beginning with Brasil ' 66made.

Sergio Mendes struck again In 2006 the old road in with the album Timeless. With Stevie WonderWill.i.amThe Black Eyed Peas and many other stars he brought old songs in a new jacket. On June 1, 2010, theBomb Pacewas 37th studio album by Mendes, released by Concord Records. [1]
