A lot of people slag this album, but I'm really fond of it. It was DEVO's last for Warner Brothers / Virgin, and perhaps the weakest of that era, but it's still an outstanding record, I thought. The original plan for Shout was to be a video LP, of a short film (or perhaps a feature, depending), released direct-to-video tape that this would have been the soundtrack to. Unfortunately, funding fell through, and Shout was stuck as just a normal LP. If you listen, though, you can still tell the rough story of what the video was going to be—in a dystopian world, a boy loses a girl, and in his despondence joins up with a Freedom-Fighter type group, but it turns out that they're a part of the Conspiracy as well, and the boy comes off all the more cynical and "experienced" for the journey. Perhaps some day, DEVO will get to make this film, but it's probably not too terribly likely anymore, sadly. I'd love to see it, though. Blah blah Infinite Zero blah bonus tracks blah blah must have blah blah Collectibles reissue sucks blah. - Rev. Syung Myung Me
