Smokie is an English rock band from Bradford who in the seventies of the twentieth century was known in Europe .

Originally the band was called Essence. They were formed in 1965 at St. Bede Catholic grammar school in Heaton, Bradford. Members of the band were teenagers Chris Norman (vocals/guitar/piano), Terry Uttley(bass/vocals), Alan Silson (lead guitar/vocals) and Ron Kelly (drums). When they were called Essence , they gave performances yet in small clubs in Bradford and the surrounding area. In the heyday of the band played Pete Spencer on the drum at Smokie.

With their second album Changing All the Time got Smokie fame in Europe, mainly by the numbers If You Think You Know How to Love Me and Don't Play Your rock'n ' roll to Me ", which were a hit. Smokie's biggest hit was Living Next Door to Alice (1976).

Trivia[Edit]Edit

The song Living Next Door to Alice was covered in 1995 under the name Gallo as Alice, who the fuck is Alice but was in fact sung by Peter Koelewijn.
