Starland Vocal Band was an American pop group from the period 1976-1980 that one big hit scored with the single Afternoon Delight, which was a number one hit in the u.s. charts.

The group originated from "Fat City", an acoustic duo from Washington, D.C. formed by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert the couple. They wrote with his John Denver hit "Take Me Home, Country Roads". In 1974 came join singer-pianist Jon Carroll joined them, and together they formed the new group with singer Margot Chapman Starland Vocal Band.They signed to the record label , windsong, by John Denver in 1976, and released their first LP , titled Starland Vocal Band. The single there, "Afternoon Delight", became an international hit and was about two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The album climbed to number 20 on Billboard's Hot 200 album list. The Group was nominated for five Grammy Awards, of which they won two, for best new artist and best vocal arrangement for "Afternoon Delight". Thanks to this success they got even a own television show on CBSThe Starland Vocal Band Show including a then unknown David Letterman. There were six episodes of aired from July to september 1977.

The second album of the group, Rear View Mirror from 1977 could not match the success of its predecessor, it hit only up to number 104 on Billboard's Hot 200. Nor was successful the successor Late Nite Radio from 1978. After the fourth album, the group fell apart from 4 x 4 1980, Danoff and Nivert divorced shortly thereafter and. Also Carroll and Chapman, who were married during the glory years of the group, would later diverge.

In 1980 also appeared another Christmas plate of the Starland Vocal Band, Christmas at Home.
