"Summer Night City" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus , the two male singers. It is ABBA's second single that is not on an album can be found. Originally it would be the first single from their new album Voulez-Vous , but the song was eventually not set it up here. The b-side of the single is a medley of the songs "Pick a Bale of Cotton", "On Top of Old Smokey" and "Midnight Special". All three traditional American song, recorded by the group in 1975.These numbers are the only released ABBA songs that the members do not themselves have written.
The recording sessions for "Summer Night City" began in early 1978. ABBA's new recording studio, Polar Music Studio, was opened in may but was not yet ready for use. Therefore were first recorded in the Metronome Studio. The 43 second ballad intro was deleted to improve quality, but it did not succeed. Mixing took even a week, much longer than mixing other ABBA songs. ABBA decided, despite the end result, in their eyes, bad, to make the number single in september. They also performed the song including the deleted intro during their world tour in 1979.
Despite the negative thoughts of the group itself, "Summer Night City" was a big hit for ABBA. The song peaked at number 1 in Ireland, Finland and Sweden, their last number one hit in their home country. However, the song was the first since SOS came not in the top three in the United Kingdom.
