History[Edit][]

The recording sessions for "Summer Night City" began in early 1978. ABBA's new recording studio, Polar Music Studio, was opened in may but was not yet ready for use. Therefore were first recorded in the Metronome Studio. The 43 second ballad intro was deleted to improve quality, but it did not succeed. Mixing took even a week, much longer than mixing other ABBA songs. ABBA decided, despite the end result, in their eyes, bad, to make the number single in september. They also performed the song including the deleted intro during their world tour in 1979.

Despite the negative thoughts of the group itself, "Summer Night City" was a big hit for ABBA. The song peaked at number 1 in Ireland, Finland and Sweden, their last number one hit in their home country. However, the song was the first since SOS came not in the top three in the United Kingdom.
