Artist: The Flying Lizards

Album: The Flying Lizards

Appears On (Mixes): Wally's Novelty Mix: She Yo-Yos Me and I Yo-Yo Her Back

Song Notes: I suppose it wouldn't really be one of my mixes without a track by The Flying Lizards. This one is of course, a cover of the Eddie Cochran song (though pretty much everyone else and their brother had a cut on it, too). This was the first Flying Lizards single, recorded as a larf by a minimalist Avant-Garde composer, David Cunningham. It's got a record for the cheapest-to-record UK hit single ever. If I recall, it cost 6 quid to record. Maybe slightly more than that, but not much. It's basically about the equivalent of 20 of today's dollars maximum. But I don't even think it's that much. It's also a really cool version. The followup was the bigger hit Money, also a cover, and a hit even in the US, although after the practical joke of the self-titled album, the band started failing commercially, and even after the excellent, non-practical-joke album Fourth Wall, no one bought the records again... except for music geeks and critics, who praised the band heavily. (Though it didn't help their sales at all.) - Rev. Syung Myung Me
