The Drifters is an American singing group, that soulrhythm and blues and doo-wopmuziek carried out. They reached the height of their popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s.

The Group was founded in 1953 by Clyde McPhatter, which known as background singer of Billy Ward & the Dominoes. When McPhatter was fired by the Dominoes, he started his own group, the first version of The Drifters.

The most famous hits by The Drifters are Up on the roofSave the last dance for meThere Goes My Baby and Money Honey. Each of these four numbers got a spot at the best three hundred songs according to the American music magazine Rolling Stone .

During the long, tumultuous history of The Drifters has a large number of singers formed part of the group, and even today, originated from the original Drifters groups still act on under that name.

The Vocal Group Hall of Fame has both The Original Drifters (1998) as Ben e. King and The Drifters (2000) included. In 2004, Rolling Stone placed The Drifters at number 81 of their list of 100 best artists ever. [1In 1988, The Drifters included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the occupation with the members Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney, Gerhardt Thrasher, Johnny Moore, Ben e. King, Charlie Thomas and Rudy Lewis.

Bill Pinkney, Charlie Thomas and Johnny Moore posthumously received Pioneer Awards from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 1999.
