The Manhattans is an American rhythm and blues group that scored a worldwide hit in 1976 with Kiss and Say Goodbye.

In 1962 were The Manhattans was established in Jersey CityNew Jersey by George "Smitty" Smith, Edward "Sonny" Bivins, Winfred "Blue" Lovett, Kenny "Wally" Kelley and Richard "Ricky" Taylor. [1Their first single For the Very First Time appeared in 1964 at Carnival Records from Newark (New Jersey).

In 1970 George Smith to lead singer died of brain cancer. He was replaced by Gerald Alston. In 1973, the group signed with Columbia Records.

Their international breakthrough followed in 1976 with the album The Manhattans and especially the ballad Kiss and Say Goodbye. In 1980 they scored another top 5 hit in the United States with Shining Star.

Gerald Alston left the Group In 1988. Roger Harris took his place. In 1990 also left Blue Lovett and Kenny Kenney, after which Edward Bivins was the only remaining original member. From 1994 consisting of Edward Bivins Alvin Pazant, Harsey Hemphill, Lee Williams, and Charles Hardy.

From the end of the 90 's started two ex-members, Gerald Alston and "Blue" Lovett, together with the new members, Troy May and David Tyson to act again under The name The Manhattans. [2they released four albums between 1999 and 2008.
