The Mars Volta is the name of a partnership between guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala founded in 2001. The Mars Volta Group is the progressive rock group that interprets the songs written by Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala. They incorporate various influences, including jazz fusion, funk and Latin, into their sound. They are known for their wild, energetic and improvised live shows, as well as their usually concept-based studio albums. They were named in 2008 by Rolling Stone magazine as rock music's "Best Prog-Rock Band".

Band Biography[]

In the wake of At the Drive-Ins break-up, Cedric and Omar decided to prog it up a notch, with the help of "sound manipulator" the not-yet-late Jeremy Ward. Thus began The Mars Volta. The group released their first album, De-Loused In The Comatorium in 2003, to general acclaim. Their second album, Frances The Mute, while recieving somewhat less acclaim, was still highly regarded by fans. Is this the future of prog rock. I for one hope so. Exciting. Visceral. Experimental. This is exactly what good hard rock and excellent prog metal is made of.
