Background[Edit][]
On 22 september 1979 Springsteen played for the first time "The River" during a concert at Madison Square Garden. This performance he gave in the context of No Nukes, a series of concerts that was protested against the use of nuclear energy. The song would be initially be part of the album The Ties That Bind, but Springsteen decided to extend it with some dark, rawer songs, and he called the double album The River. [3] the shooting of "The River" took place in July or August 1979 in The Power Station's place in Manhattan (New York). [4]
Springsteen was when writing the text inspired by a Hank Williams's first number , called the "Long Gone Lonesome Blues". [5] In the song Springsteen sings about the frustrations of life in the working class:[6] "I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company. But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy. "(Dutch: "I got a job in the building at the Johnstown Company. But lately there is not much work by the economy. ").
A conversation between Springsteen and his brother-in-law was the basis for "The River". He was at the time, lost his job in the construction and to make matters worse ran his marriage on the rocks. [7] Springsteen is regarded as an icon of the American working class and the trials and tribulations of this class run like a red thread through his oeuvre. [8] [9] with his first two albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey (1973) and The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle (1973), he released atribute to this life. He then brought on Born to Run (1975) and Darkness at the Edge of Town (1978) the struggles and frustrations to the jaw. The River with the albums (1981) and Nebraska (1982) described Springsteen the despair that may have these difficulties as a result. So goes "The River" about disappointments and expectations that cannot be fulfilled: "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true. Or is it something worse " (Dutch:" Is a dream a lie if it is not true. Or is it something worse. ")
The song appeared in 1986 on the live album Live/1975-85. This recording was a recording of a concert on september 30, 1985 at the LA Coliseum. "The River" makes further part of the compilation albums Greatest Hits (1995) and The Essential Bruce Springsteen (2003).
