- Robbie Robertson -vocals, background vocals, acoustic guitar and electric guitar
Hudson (the organist of The Band) and Manuel (the pianist) had exchanged by instrument. At subsequent performances were organ and/or synthesizers played by Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel, who also often the piano by a share of the lead vocals of accounted for The Weight .The House "Big Pink", where The Weight came into being.
It is one of the songs from their debutalbum Music From Big Pink (1968). The album's title is taken from the House "Big Pink" in Woodstock, New York where The Band lived and with Bob Dylan , among others, the legendary Basement Tapes had taken up. The Weight of the credits are in the hands of songwriter Robbie Robertson, but the song came about thanks to close cooperation of all five members of The Band.
The Weight was also released as a single, with the b-side written by Dylan I Shall Be Released. The picture took out only a # 63 in the UK charts and # 21 in.Although The Weight so not high on the poplijsten came, it got called the # 41 place on the list of 500 greatest songs of all time according to Rolling Stonemagazine. The Band hit this number rarely over during their concerts and also in the solo careers of the group members remained a standard part of their repertoire. It is many times by other artists included and is considered a classic in the rock music.
The Weight is a slightly surreal (or, as Robertson said, "Buñuelish") travel story about a person who arrives in the town of Nazareth in Pennsylvania. Once the traveler meets different people.
