This Was is the debut album by British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1968. The album was recorded at a cost of only £ 1200 GBP, and sounds sold well upon its release.

The album is musically quite different from later Jethro Tull albums; It's more of a blues album than a rock album. The main reason is that guitarist Mick Abrahams is a blues guitarist. The other band members come from the blues world, namely: Ian Anderson and Glenn Cornick from The John Evan Band and Mick Abrahams and Clive Buncker from McGREGOR's Engine.

Unlike later albums, Anderson wrote this album along with Abrahams. Anderson would Later that always do only.

Just after the release of the album the band leaves Abrahams due to difference of opinion with Anderson about the musical direction of the band, and the continuous rivalry which of them is the leader of the band. Tony Iommi is the new guitarist, but is soon succeeded by Martin Barre.
