Entrance is the brainchild of Chicago native Guy Blakeslee, who was not only part of The Convocation of… but has also recently shared the stage with likes of Devandra Banhart and Cat Power. The psychedelic Delta blues that makes up this wonderful album is another amazing release by Fat Possum Records (The Black Keys, R.L. Burnside, Bob Log III). Blakeslee’s soulful and warbling voice is perfectly complimented by the thick textures of bluesy acoustic guitars, raw drumming and the occasional screeching fiddle. I am not close to being any kind of blues specialist, but in my opinion this definitely channels the genre’s wailing spirit. Somehow, he is able to remain loyal to the aged Delta blues all the while progressing the genre and keeping it interesting enough to entice even the ficklest fans of today. Wandering Stranger is a savagely beautiful album that manifests visions of dark, swampy marshlands strewn with gators, possums and lonely hearts. Mpardaiolo
