When I'm dead and gone is the debut single by McGuinness Flint. It is taken from their debut album McGuinness Flint. The song was written by the two people who later would form the duo Gallagher & Lyle . The song is inspired by the life of Robert Johnson, blues guitar legend (Hey there, ladies, Johnson's free). The title of the song is a line from Me and the devil blues by Johnson.

The sound of the song is slightly different compared to other folkrepertoire. On the picture you can see the mandolin good to hear. Also the kazoo and dobro to hear. By the sound Capitol Records had little confidence that it would be a hit, they were wrong.

McGuinness would later admit that it was a good idea to bring out the single around Christmas , which pushed the sales.

The song was covered a number of times. Phil Everly and names it once on Status Quo , but also there are also versions known from Def Leppard and James Last.
