ReviewEdit

I am not sure exactly when underground hip-hop went from dark, emotional observational rap to a bright, post-disco dance party, but its definitely a breath of fresh air. Ninja Tune’s imprint Big Dada may be the culprit responsible for this evolution thanks to infectious releases from Diplo, Lotek HiFi, Part 2 and their latest noise-maker, Spank Rock. The loose Baltimore collective lead by emcee Naeem Hanks aka Spank Rock, producer Armani XXXchange and DJ Chris Rockwell combine forces to create a sound that is a cross between The Neptunes and the DFA. Equal parts Miami Bass, UK Grime and Baltimore House, Spank Rock started making noise with their single Put that Pussy on Me, which established their club-ready sound articulated with Hanks’ humorously filthy vocal styling. ‘YoYoYoYoYo’s’ biggest asset maybe that it is accessible to not only to the club crowds, but underground hip-hop heads, adventurous indie listeners, ravers (if they still exist) and whatever crowd M.I.A. appeals to. And on top of all that, their live shows include two DJs battling, traditional African djimbe drummers and a dance troupe called the Love Peace Project. With such contagious music and their acclaimed live show, Spank Rock is posed to take center stage in this post-bling world. Mpardaiolo
